The 26 Laws of the Human Experience Operating System

The Woman Behind the Book

A life lived widely.
A purpose held firmly.

Nerissa Persaud has spent her life studying what people feel at work, and why.

Founder of Ignite The Human Spark and advisor to corporations, governments, NGOs and foundations, she brings more than twenty years across continents and cultures to a conviction that has shaped her work: human experience is the operating system underneath performance.

This book grew out of that work, and out of a life that kept asking her to see more closely.

01 · The education of a life across borders

A daughter of Guyana.
A citizen of experience.

My career began with Le Méridien, continued with Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, and opened into a wider world of hospitality. But it didn’t stop there, application became useful for any organisation that has people, serves people, and is responsible for people. My life and work in the human operating system ran across borders, boardrooms, classrooms, stages, lobbies, screens and across coffee tables.

Each place asked something
different of me.
Each left something with me.

Trust

When trust is missing.

I have worked with struggling teams whose deepest barrier was trust. Those experiences taught me to look beneath the performance problem, to the relationships and unspoken concerns that shaped what people felt able to do together.

Leadership

The weight leaders carry.

Alongside them were exhausted leaders who wanted to do the right thing, yet worked inside systems that left them almost no room to act on that intention. Their exhaustion raised questions that another performance target could not answer.

Accountability

The cost of constrained choices.

Sometimes those leaders were penalised for decisions made from the only choices their organisations allowed. I came to see how easily a system could demand accountability while denying people the authority or alternatives they needed to exercise it.

The human operating system

A different place to begin.

These experiences changed where I look for answers: at the conditions surrounding people, the choices available to them, and whether an organisation makes the work it asks of them possible. That is the human operating system I have spent my life learning to read.

What travels with me

My idea of stability is different from most.
I feel grounded by experience.

By learning how other people live, and by the relationships that travel with us. The world has given me much of the perspective I now bring into a room.

02 · The people I come home to

A life on the move.
A place in one another.

“Wherever we are together,
we are home.”

Pascal, my husband for over 15 years, and I met in hospitality. Our children, Tristan and Maya, have travelled with us since they were babies; even Dexter travels. They are teenagers now, and our life of family, work and ambition stretches across three addresses: the Cayman Islands, Antigua and Barbuda, and Marbella, Spain.

We are a family on the move, but movement has never meant the absence of roots. Ours live in the people we come home to, the cultures we become part of and the life we keep choosing to build together.

Motherhood has sharpened my understanding of growth, belonging and the difference between asking more of someone and giving them what they need to become more. It is an education I carry into my work every day.

The spark · Understood years later

I didn’t know it then.
I was meeting
my life’s work.

Only years later did I understand what that moment had named: a promise to ignite the human spark, long before it became the name of a company.

I was twenty-two, an executive assistant with Four Seasons in the Maldives, when a colleague from another hotel told me, in tears, that her boss had humiliated her in public. I listened, but I could not leave her there. I wanted to help her reach a place that would recognise what she had to offer.

I asked for her CV and worked through my connections. When those conversations led nowhere, I searched the Four Seasons internal listings and found an opening in the Seychelles for an executive administrative assistant to the general manager. Our own Director of Human Resources thought it might be a role I wanted for myself. I made sure she applied.

She got the interview, then the job, and went on to build a rich career. My boss began joking that I was in the recruitment business.

A few years later, in India, that network grew into my first company, a recruitment business serving the luxury hospitality industry. It laid the foundation for what would become Ignite the Human Spark, a company dedicated to aligning people, purpose and performance. Today, that work extends through three complementary brands: OI, advancing Organisational Intelligence to help organisations understand, adapt and perform; Human Experience at Heart, bringing greater intention to how people are understood, valued and treated; and Exceptional Hospitality Experience, strengthening the leadership, culture and service that create memorable guest experiences.

“I saw what she was capable of and opened a door. Walking through it, and everything after, was hers.”

04 · And now, the book

My name on the cover.
So many lives in its pages.

Holding this book is an extraordinary milestone for me. I see how far I have come, and I think of the people whose stories, generosity and encounters have helped shape the way I look at the world.

The 26 Laws of the Human Experience Operating System brings those questions into a book you can use. Through the story of a Caribbean resort and the work of rebuilding it, I invite you to look beneath performance and examine the conditions that produce it.

My hope is that something here helps you see your own world more clearly: a person differently, a recurring problem more deeply, a possibility you had not yet considered. This is where the story becomes yours.

With gratitude,
Nerissa
